Imogene M. McAreavy, of Melbourne, Fla., formerly of Maquoketa, died Wednesday, March 30, 2016, in her 92nd year of life. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maquoketa. The family will receive friends and relatives at 9 a.m. for visitation before Mass. A private family burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Coggon. Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, is assisting the family at this time.
Imogene was born Oct. 24, 1923, in Ryan to James and Emma (Duffy) Donahue. She was a graduate of St. John's High School and Cedar Rapids Business College. She started her career at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids until she married Donald E. McAreavy on Aug. 8, 1946, in Ryan. They settled in Maquoketa, where she was executive secretary of McAreavy Chiropractic and the Iowa Chiropractic Society.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters and a longtime member of Maquoketa Country Club. She enjoyed golfing, reading, traveling and playing bridge.
She is survived by her four children, Dr. Steven McAreavy (Robyn) of Weddington, N.C., Mary (Bill) Lewis of Palm Shores, Fla., Kevin (Leslie) McAreavy of Huntsville, Ala., and Kate (Billy) Davis of Melbourne, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Jacob, Megan, Ian, Devin, Austin, Drake, Aidan, Megan and Jeff; and a great- grandchild, Gavin. She also is survived by a brother-in- law, John (Lola) McAreavy; a sister-in-law, Kathleen McAreavy; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Donald E. "Doc" McAreavy; her parents; a brother, Donald Donahue; a sister, Maerita (Donahue) Dolphin; two brothers-in-law, Don Dolphin and Paul McAreavy; one sister-in-law, Regina Donahue; one nephew, Terry Dolphin; and one niece, Stephanie McAreavy.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Sacred Heart Catholic School in Imogene's memory.
