Ila E. Northup, 93, died peacefully Monday, Aug. 7, 2017, at Crestview Care Center surrounded by her family. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Jim Altmaier officiating.

Ila was born Oct. 20, 1923, in Iowa City, the daughter of William and Alma Reitz Sass. On April 27, 1973, Ila married Donald Northup in Iowa City. She was a longtime resident of Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Legacy Pointe.
Ila had been employed at Moore Business Forms and was an Avon representative. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Ila loved to care for others. She was a wonderful caregiver and friend. She enjoyed crafts, painting, playing euchre with friends and reading mysteries. Ila loved to travel and wintered in Mesa, Ariz. She will be remembered as a wonderful hostess, her "secret advice" to family, her generosity and unconditional love for others. From a loving mother of three kids of her own, to an independent single lady, to a loving mother of a blended family, to a grandma, and a great-grandma, she was the best! Most important to her was her family.
Ila is survived by her three children, Pat Knebel (Ben Halupnik) of Iowa City, Marilyn (Gary) Jackson of Montezuma and Jim (Joan) Altmaier of Ottumwa; three stepchildren, Donovan (Angela) Northup of Cedar Rapids, Sandra Taylor of Sarasota, Fla., and Donna Gross of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, Tom Knebel, Kristin Knebel, Robin Jackson Miller, Stacey Jackson, Mike Jackson, Jim Halupnik, Tony Northup, Adam Northup, Jesse Gross, Paige Gross and Jeff Taylor; and 10 great-grandchildren, Alex, McKenzie, Isla, Jude, Brooklyn, Amelia, Aiden, Eva, Josiah and Isaac.
Ila was preceded by her parents; her husband; her siblings, Phyllis Fitzpatrick and Marvin and Carroll Sass; and son-in-law, Jim Knebel.
