Ida Breitbach, 97, of Ridgeway Place, Waterloo, died at UnityPoint Health - Allen Hospital on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014.
She was born Aug. 1, 1917, in Winthop, Iowa, the daughter of William S. and Ida Johnson Hamilton. She married Louis F. Breitbach on March 20, 1940, in Quimby, Iowa. He died Dec. 31, 2004.
She graduated from Winthrop Public Schools in 1935 and received her teaching degrees from Iowa State Teachers College. Ida began teaching at Byron No. 2, a one-room country schoolhouse northwest of Winthrop, in 1937. She taught first grade at Quimby and Prairie Center in Delaware County. She taught at Jewett and Frances Grout Elementary, Waterloo; St. Matthew's Elementary School, Cedar Rapids; and retired from East Elementary, Independence. Ida was a member of Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church, PEO, Retired Teacher's Association and Boy Scouts Pack 7.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Lou Breitbach, Independence; son, Joe (Julie) Breitbach, Waverly; son, Dan (Cheryl) Breitbach, Waverly; daughter-in-law, Francine Johnson, Rio Verde, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Cindy Dunn, Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; sons, Ted and Ben; four brothers; and three sisters.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church, Waterloo, with burial at 2 p.m. Monday at Wilson Cemetery, Independence. Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Locke Funeral Home; (319) 233-6138.
