Dr. Ian A. MacFarlane, 82, of Cedar Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014.
He was the beloved husband of Lois MacFarlane for 57 years.
Ian was born in Duluth, Minn., and was the son of the late John and Annabell MacFarlane.
He was preceded in death by infant son, Eric MacFarlane.
He is survived by his wife, Lois MacFarlane; three daughters, Cheryl (Brett) Foley, Heather (Bill) Johnson and Kristen MacFarlane; grandchildren, Ryan Ashley Johnson, Savanna Snead,
Leah, Alex, Ben, Jenna and Ryan Foley; brother, Norman (Linda) MacFarlane; sister, Mary Kivisto; many nieces and nephews; and many close cousins in Scotland.
Ian received his bachelor's degree in philosophy from Butler University, his Master of Science degree from the University of Minnesota, his master's degree in philosophy from Yale and his Ph.D. in physics from Bryn Mawr.
Ian worked in research at the Lawerance Radiation Laboratory in Liverpool, Calif., and was a member of the faculty at Wilson
College in Chambersburg, Pa., the College of Wooster, Ohio, Cottey College in Nevada, Mo., Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids and Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo.
Ian was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, dedicated teacher and proud Scot.
He lived his life with a love of learning. He was a stickler for precision and had a wonderful dry sense of humor.
Ian enjoyed many hobbies and adventures in life, including hunting, flying airplanes, karate, running, swimming, spelunking, hiking and canoeing.
In his spare time he was rarely seen without a book and highlighter in hand. His great love was helping students learn, and he was well respected by his students and fellow faculty.
Ian will be greatly missed by his loving
family and friends.
Ian was a member of Coventry Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls.
Per his wishes services will be held for immediate family only.
The family would like to thank the staff at Manor Care for the wonderful attention they provided.
