Joy Klopp, 88, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, May 19, 2017. Cedar Memorial is serving the family. There will be no visitation. A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, June 23, at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 301 First St. NW, Mount Vernon, IA 52314. The Rev. Bill Warhover will officiate.

A luncheon will take place following the service in the church social hall.

Joy was born March 13, 1929, in Des Moines to William Roy and Alice (Walker) Syers. She was a graduate of Franklin High School and married Robert S. Klopp at Central Park Presbyterian Church on April 25, 1948.

Joy is survived by her three children, John (Bobbie) Klopp of Pine, Colo., and Deborah Klopp and Robert Klopp of Cedar Rapids; her grandchildren, James Klopp of Fort Collins, Colo., and Sara (Brian) Curto of Castle Rock, Colo.; three great-granddaughters, Avery, Sophie and Isabelle Curto; her black Schnauzer, A.J.; two

sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Those preceding Joy in death were her husband of 56 years, Bob (2004); her parents and in-laws; her brother and sister-in-law, William and Shirley Syers; and brother-in-law, Ed Musser.

She was a member of Central Park Presbyterian Church for over 72 years (which in recent years became Echo Hill Presbyterian Church). Over the years, she taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, served on the Pastor Search Committee, attended the Circle of Hope, and thoroughly enjoyed singing alto in the Chancel Choir.

Joy was a founding member of the Cedar Valley Chapter of the Embroiderers' Guild of America Inc. and an accomplished canvas needlework artist. She was a voracious reader; Basically Books was one of her favorite places to go.

She was a stay-at-home mother, stepping into the workforce when her children were in their late teens. She worked with the Department of Human Services for 20 years. Joy was a volunteer teacher when the Jane Boyd Community House established its first preschool program.

Joy had an infectious laugh and was a lovely person, who embodied all that is good in this world. We will continue to carry her spirit and how she touched each of our lives as we move forward.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Mercy for their compassion and caring assistance during her final months.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Joy's name.
