Hungerford, Walter Lewis
Walter Lewis Hungerford, 90, of Edinburgh, Texas, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at The Bridges Assisted Living, Texas. A memorial service was held Aug. 27 in Knoxville, Tenn. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl Marie (Kohl) Hungerford; his children, Curtis, Nancy (Krizek), David, Dennis, James and Carol (Courtaway); and a sister, Inez Sparby of San Antonio Texas.
He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Kathryn and Lois; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and foster children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Louis and Bernice (Knowles); and brothers, James “Eldon” and Neil.
Walter married Pearl Marie Kohl on June 23, 1946. He was a graduate of Manly High School and Iowa State University and other post graduate studies. He taught agriculture to post World War II GIs. He taught at Lisbon High School, Grant Wood Area Agency and Alburnett High School. He was an Iowa State College agriculture extension agent in the early 1950s.
He was an active member of Covenant Bible Church's early formation, as well as other Parachurch organizations. In the 1980s, he and Pearl became winter Texans.
Memorials are requested to the Hungerford Memorial at Berean Bible Church, 2329 Prosser Rd., Knoxville, TN 37914.
