Humphries, Dorothy A. 'Dot'
Dorothy A. “Dot” Humphries, 88, of Mount Vernon, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at The Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids. Services, with military rites: 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Friday. Pastor Bill Daylong will officiate. Private family inurnment: Mount Vernon Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Lynne (Mike) Gonzales of Moreno Valley, Calif., and Cathy (Dan) Stoner and Marcia (Kevin) Driscoll, both of Mount Vernon; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Kim, Vicki (Alan), Matt (Amy), Chris (Olivia), Emily, Erin (Andy) and Megan (Mike); and four great-grandchildren, Brooke, Grace, Caleb and Katie.
She was preceded in death by her husband, and one brother, Bill Johnson.
Dot was born June 25, 1923, in Mount Vernon, the daughter of Roy and Dorothy (Neff) Johnson. She served during World War II in the Army Nurse Corps at the 58th Field Hospital in Germany, where she met her husband. She married Dewey R. Humphries on Jan. 17, 1948, in Mount Vernon. He died in 2006. As a registered nurse, the art of nursing was very important to Dot. Her nurturing, caring personality was evident to all of those she cared for. She and Dewey had owned and operated the Holiday House Restaurant in Mount Vernon for many years. They were both proud of their employees, many or who became lifelong friends. Dot was a very involved and a faithful member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, PEO and Entre Nous.
She was an avid photographer and reader. She enjoyed travel and especially the time she spent with her beloved family.
Dot was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was blessed to have so many friends.
Memorial donations may be given to the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church or Mercy Hospice in Dot's name.
