Hughes, Barry J.
Barry J. Hughes, 56, of Shellsburg, formerly of the Maquoketa area, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at Crestridge Nursing Home, Maquoketa. A celebration of his life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.
Barry Joseph Hughes was born June 21, 1955, in Maquoketa, Iowa, son of Merlin J. “Mick” Hughes and Carol (Hinke) Ripple.
He married Mona F. Keeney on April 28, 1979, at the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa. She died Nov. 7, 1987.
Barry worked at Cat in Mount Joy, and worked in construction in later years.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Barry enjoyed riding his motorcycle, his dogs, and being with his family and friends.
Barry is survived by one daughter, Nicole (Cory) Rushford of Wyoming; four grandchildren, Hunter, Bryce, Keegan and Aspen; his mother, Carol Ripple of Maquoketa; his father and stepmother, Mick and Virginia Hughes of Preston; two sisters, Lori (Rich) Skrivseth of Preston and Mary (Marty) Hudrlik of Maquoketa; and four brothers, Lynn (Julie) Hughes of Cedar Rapids, Jay (Sherri) Hughes of Preston, Christopher (Tracey) Hughes of Davenport and Kip (Tammy) Keehner of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mona in 1987; his son, Cale in 2007; a brother, Dwain Morehead in 2010; and his grandparents.
Memorials are preferred.
