Hubler, Charles D.
Charles D. Hubler, 81, of Lisbon, died Friday, March 26, 2010, at the Mechanicsville Nursing and Rehabilitation. A visitation will be held Tuesday, March 30, at the Lisbon United Methodist Church from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the church, with Pastor Tom Mattson officiating. Charles' last trip will be taken in his old Diamond T truck driven by his unofficial son, Jay Proffitt, to the Lisbon Cemetery. The Cremation Society of Eastern Central Western Iowa is assisting the family.
Charles David Hubler, son of Leo H. and Bertha Johnson Hubler, was born June 18, 1928, in the house on the farm he bought from his father in Cedar County. When he was 3 years old his mother died on Aug. 23, 1931. His father, Leo, raised him alone until he remarried. Even as a young boy he helped his father show purebred hogs. At the age of 8 he was working in the field driving a team of horses on the disc, etc. He graduated from Lisbon High School in 1947. He married Thelma Jeannette McCall on June 18, 1949, at the Methodist church in Mechanicsville. He was a farmer all his life and also worked as building supervisor for 23 years at the fitness center at Cornell College. He was a township trustee for 20 years. He was a Mason, serving as Master for two years and was a member of the United Methodist Church and a former member of Eastern Star. He raised purebred Hampshire hogs for years and enjoyed going to different fairs and being in competition; his family followed in his footsteps with fair competitions. When he was raising hogs he belonged to the Cedar County Pork Producers and was on the council and was president for one term.
He and his wife enjoyed traveling. They didn't think there was any road in northeast Iowa they hadn't traveled on, but almost always seemed to find a new road. They traveled to a number of countries - in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii and most states. They both enjoyed sports. When their children were in sports, they missed very few home or away wrestling meets and basketball games.
He was the father of four children, Diana Lee (Wayne) Novak, Mount Vernon, David Alan (Sheila) Hubler, North Liberty, Duane Arther (Jennifer) Hubler, Springfield, Mo., and Donna Sue (Dan) Nevins, Lisbon. He leaves 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and a half sister, Pricilla Burnett.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother; half brother; and a grandson, Anthony David Hubler.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lisbon Methodist Church, Camp Courageous, Shriners' Transportation Fund, and Make a Wish Foundation.
