Howard John Sorum, 83, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Atkins, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at The Gardens of Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 9, will be at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Norway. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 10, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, with Fr. Ken Glaser presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, where there will be full military rites. Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Howard was born June 30, 1938, in Waukon, the son of Julius and Martha (Halverson) Sorum. He graduated from Waukon High School. Howard served in the U.S. Navy for four years. Howard was united in marriage to Judith “Judy” Urell on April 18, 1964, in Waukon. He worked at as a machinist at Universal Engineering and Goss Manufacturing for many years. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, playing cards with a card club for over 40 years, watching football, cheering the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones, socializing with his many friends, as well as spending time with his loving family.
Howard is survived by his children, Deb Hamilton of Atkins, Kathy (Kelly) Schmidt of Springville, Annie (J.T.) Young of Virginia Beach, Va., and Karen (Glen) Frese of Atkins; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Delores Johnson of Waukon; his sisters-in-law, Mary Brandt of Atkins, Sarah Drew of Cedar Rapids and Kate Urell of Waukon; as well as his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Judy; and great-granddaughter, Iva Lea. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff at Hospice of Mercy, Stoney Point Meadows, and The Gardens for their loving care of Howard.
