Howard Jay Burnside, 92, of Central City, passed away Monday, Sept. 5, 2016, at his home. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City. Funeral service: 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Sts. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, Monticello. Graveside service: 2:30 p.m. Friday at Mount Clark Cemetery, rural Central City.
Howard is survived by his wife, Lillian; daughters, Jeanne (Peter) Pflughaupt and Julie (David) Edgerly, both of Central City, and Joni Erickson (Darren Olson) of Parker, Colo.; grandchildren, Brett (DeGwen) Pflughaupt of Marion, Greg (Leigh) Pflughaupt of Palo, Stacie (Nick) Earle of Omaha, Neb., Valeri Schlotterbeck of Marion, Trent (Lindsey) Fiechtner of Altoona, Vanessa Fiechtner of Central City, Spencer Erickson of Parker, Colo., and Jordan Erickson of Parker, Colo.; and great-grandchildren, Matthew and Madyson Pflughaupt and Chloe and Cody Pflughaupt.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Winnie Henderson, Mildred Smith, Edith Holub and Lois Ellwood.
Howard was born Sept. 1, 1924, in the home where he lived his entire life, the son of Wallis and Minnie (Smith) Burnside. He graduated from Coggon High School. Howard married Barbara Wise in 1951. She passed away in 1955. On May 31, 1958, he married Lillian Elizabeth Fobian in Centerville, Iowa. Howard was a farmer and also worked at Collins Radio for 23 years. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church.
Howard enjoyed woodworking, crossword puzzles and gardening. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was proud of all the accomplishments and activities they were involved in.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Howard's memory.
