Hovey, Richard J. 'Dick'
Richard J. Hovey “Dick,” 90, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Marion with Pastor Perry Fruhling officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and one hour before the service Friday at the church.
Dick is survived by his son, Mark Hovey of Lamont; son, John Hovey (Michelle) of Red Wing, Minn.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and his precious dog, Molly, his faithful companion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Helen Olson and Dorothy Olson; one brother, Emerson; and by two wives, Elna Gilbertson Hovey, mother of his two sons, and Helen Mollman Hovey.
Richard was born Sept. 30, 1922, in Fort Dodge, the son of Elmer and Hannah (Skien) Hovey. He attended Coe College where he earned a letter for the golf team and became a finalist in the Cedar Rapids Golf Tournament. He then graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Dick was a United States Navy veteran of World War II serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He was a charter member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and enjoyed church, socializing, golf, sports and was an avid Hawkeye fan. He loved his family and friends, his smile and witty sense of humor will be greatly missed.
