Houtzager, Levina

Levina Houtzager, 90, of Shellsburg, died Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Rock Ridge Residential Care Center, Shellsburg. Private graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery, Shellsburg. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Family Center, 605 Second Ave., Vinton.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Levina Neeltje de-Hamer was born Dec. 25, 1920, at Zeeland, Holland, to Gillis and Neeltje (de-Boer) de-Hamer. She was united in marriage to Louis Houtzager on Jan. 24, 1941, in Delft, Holland.

Levina loved music, she and her husband performed together at area nursing homes, including Rock Ridge and at ballrooms in Donna, Texas, where they wintered for 13 years. Levina played the piano and Louis would play the drums and sing. In her leisure, Levina also enjoyed her flowers and spending time outside.

She is survived by her three daughters, Wilma (Tom) Busenbark of Hackensack, Minn., Nellie (Tom) Saunders of Cedar Rapids, and Louise (Bill) Bruce of Shellsburg; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Levina was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis on June 16, 2006; her grandson, Craig; her granddaughter, Carla Beatty; her son-in-law, Don Fiebelkorn; and her three brothers.
