Houser, Helen E.
Helen E. Houser, 95, died peacefully Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at Mercy Iowa City following an extended illness. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 2, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with Father Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.
Helen was born May 5, 1916, in Iowa City, the daughter of Anton and Elizabeth (Cihler) Shimon. She was a graduate of Solon High School. On Sept. 16, 1935, Helen married Walter Houser in Iowa City. Walter died in 2003. Helen and Walter were lifelong residents of the Iowa City and Newport Township area.
Helen was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed baking, especially kolaches, gardening and caring for children.
Helen is survived by her four children, Woodrow “Woody” Houser of Iowa City, Anton “Tony” (Gina) Houser of Montrose, Bonnie (LaVerne “Butch”) Forbes of Iowa City and Lawrence “Larry” (Christa) Houser of Buffalo, Iowa; 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, William; one grandchild, Brenda; one great-grandchild, Miranda; and three siblings, Eleanor Huff, Donald Shimon and Louis Shimon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Helen E. Houser Memorial Fund.
