Janet was born Aug. 16, 1929, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Ralph and Margaret (Baumhover) Wieland. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1947. On June 10, 1950, she was united in marriage to John D. Hornstein. In 1957, they moved to Monticello, where they raised their two sons and lived for over 50 years before moving to Cedar Falls in 2010.
Janet had a contagious passion for life and lived it to the fullest! She loved spending time with family and enjoyed parties, dancing, card games, recipe collecting, her two poodles and travel. She was especially skilled at bridge and participated in many card clubs. Janet was very charismatic and took pleasure in sharing good times with friends and acquaintances.
Janet is survived by her husband, John; and two sons, John Steven Hornstein of Cedar Falls and Scott (Joyce) Hornstein of Huxley.
Preceding Janet in death were her parents.
The family thanks the staff at Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center and Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls for their attentive care and kindness. We also want to thank all of our many friends for being there for Janet during her life.
