Horn, Lee R.
Lee R. Horn, 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, in his home at Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids.
Lee was born in New Berlin, Ill., on March 29, 1925, to John and Louise Horn. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Lee requested that there be no visitation or services. His remains will be buried with family members at the Oakridge Cemetery in Springfield, Ill.
He served in the Army during World War II, finishing up in the European theater. After graduation from the University of Illinois in 1950, Lee and George Appleby founded the Appleby & Horn Tile Co. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Lee felt that he had a good life. He had lots of friends both from his business associates and social life. He was particularly active in skiing and sailing. His skiing activity took him on several trips to the Alps in Europe, Canada and almost every ski area in the Rocky Mountains. His sailing activity included Bare-Boat charters in the Virgin Island as well on the local lakes and the Mississippi River. He also enjoyed fishing, golf and trips with friends to places anywhere someone would ask him to go. He surely will be missed by them all.
Lee's friends are all invited to gather at a Celebration of Life at the Elmcrest Country Club from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 31. Anyone who would like to make a contribution in his name might consider that he thought highly of the Salvation Army, The Red Cross and Camp Courageous. Memorials may be sent to his P.O. Box 2066, Cedar Rapids, IA 52406.
Iowa Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.
