Horn, Doris Ann
Doris Ann Horn
Oct. 26, 1928 - Dec. 29, 2010
Mrs. Doris Horn, of Harlingen, Texas, passed away at Valley Baptist Hospital early on the morning of Dec. 29, 2010, after a long battle with Wegener's disease.
Mrs. Horn was born, raised and lived much of her life in Clarence, Iowa, before moving to Harlingen in the early 1990s. She was the only child of Frank and Elna (Burton) Dohrman and was raised most of her childhood in the old Clarence Hotel owned by her grandfather, L.L. Burton. Doris graduated valedictorian of her Clarence High School class and subsequently married Marvin Horn. That marriage lasted 60 years until Marvin's death in 2006 and produced two daughters, Linda Burton-Vickers of Sunny Hills, Fla., and Terry Horn of Big Spring, Neb.
Doris was employed for many years by the Clarence Telephone Co., first as a teenage switchboard operator, then as part time receptionist. She was a gifted seamstress, crafted clothing for herself and her daughters, as well as a talented craftswoman with crocheting and other needlework. Her work won many ribbons at various fairs around the nation. She was a long time member of St. John UCC in Clarence.
Other survivors include a grandson, Fredd and Julia Burton, plus four great-grandchildren, all of Merced, Calif.; and special cousins, Miss Neva Collins of Clarence and Mrs. Lois Renter of Cedar Rapids, who grew up with Doris.
Doris will be cremated, and her remains, as well as those of her husband, Marvin, will be interred in the Horn Family plot in a springtime service at St. John's Church Cemetery in Clarence, conducted by her grandniece, the Rev. Lynn Butterbrodt.
Special thanks from the family go to her close friend, Mrs. Frances Yonker, for all her assistance and friendship to Doris during these last years, as well as to her caregivers, Karen Winslow and Mary Trevino.
