Hopkinson, Carolyn May (Fox)

Carolyn May (Fox) Hopkinson, 87, of Kalona, died Jan. 24, 2013, at her home. A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Saturday at Gay & Ciha Funeral Chapel in Oxford (132 E. Main).

She was born Dec. 2, 1925, in Charleston, Vt., daughter of Charles and Eva (Norris) Fox. Carolyn spent her early years in Orleans County, Vt., and graduated from high school in 1943 from Newport High School in Newport, Vt. She worked at Woolworth's store and Bell Telephone before she married Reginald Hopkinson in September 1947. Carolyn and her family also lived in Concord, Mass., before settling in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1960. After her divorce in 1965, she worked at Sears, the Fabric Shop at Lindale Mall, and she retired from her job as cashier at the River Room in the Iowa Memorial Union at the University of Iowa.

After her retirement Carolyn spent time with all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Wellman, Iowa, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Takoma Park, Md.

Although she required care at Parkview Manor in Wellman from 2010 to 2012, she was fortunate to be able to spend her final months at home with her daughter, Elizabeth, in Kalona. She died peacefully at home with her family around her.

Carolyn's family includes her daughters, Crystal Carolyn (Hopkinson) Wenman, Elizabeth Ruth (Hopkinson) Mathes, and Marta Jean Hopkinson; grandchildren, James Wenman, David Wenman, Rebecca Hopkinson, Melanie Mathes, Dylan Mathes, Joshua Hopkinson Dimenco, Melissa Hopkinson Fernandez, Jonathan Hopkinson, Daniel Goldschmidt-Hopkinson, Sarah Goldschmidt-Hopkinson, and Leah Goldschmidt-Hopkinson; 10 great-grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eva Priscilla (Norris) Fox and Charles Erwin Fox; siblings, Doris Tetrault, Cathleen Banfield, Ruth Buck and Carroll Fox; son, Carroll John Hopkinson; grandchildren, Corey Hopkinson and Dawn Danielle Hoskins; former husband, Reginald Charles Hopkinson; and nephews, Sonny Tetrault and Bradley Fox.
