Hoover, Joyce
Joyce Hoover, 94, of Bethany Home, Dubuque, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012. Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 19, at St. John Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Kathleen Milligan officiating. Inurnment will be held at Cedar Memorial Mausoleum in Cedar Rapids following the memorial service. The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F Kennedy Rd., Dubuque, is in charge of the arrangements.
Joyce was born on July 15, 1918, in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of Curtis and Corrine (McElroy) Dollman. The family moved to Cedar Rapids where Joyce graduated from high school and Coe College, class of 1940. She began her teaching career in Clear Lake where she met Horace “ Herb” Schofield Hoover. They were married Aug. 30, 1943.
For many years Joyce and Herb lived in Oelwein where Joyce taught physical education at Sacred Heart High School. In 1956, they moved to Dubuque and Joyce continued her teaching at Dubuque Senior High School until 1969.
Joyce was renowned for her baking, especially her snickerdoodles, potato chip cookies, lemon meringue pie and Fifth Sunday chocolate cake. She was an avid golfer and a prolific knitter, particularly of baby bootees and sweaters. She will be remembered for her love of big cars, her enthusiasm for life and her wry sense of humor.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, PEO Chapter GE and Kappa Delta Sorority.
Joyce taught and mentored countless students and young people who survive and are grateful for her firm and loving guidance. Among those are her godchildren including, John Wetlaufer of Calistoga, Calif., James Phelps of Iowa City and Suzanne Blanchard of Dubuque, as well as her “adopted” godchildren, Dorsey (Wetlaufer) Phelps of Iowa City and Ted and Marilyn Blanchard of Dubuque; cousins, Sandy Charlet of Paducah, Ky. and Bill Dollman of Iowa City; and a niece, Linda Daley of Cedar Rapids.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Horace “Herb” Schofield Hoover; her parents; and her sister, Jean Elizabeth (Dollman) Kriz McQuiston.
Memorials may be given to St. John's Episcopal Church or Bethany Home in Dubuque.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Bethany Home for their Care and Support given to Joyce over the past three years.
