Hogan, Elizabeth Barrett
Elizabeth Barrett Hogan (nee Grant) died peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 24, 2009, at the Evangelical Home in Saline, Mich. She was 78 years old.
She was born in 1931 in Redbank, N.J., and graduated from Passaic Valley High School, Little Falls, N.J., in 1949. Betty, as she was then known, played the title role in “Dear Ruth” her senior year. In her yearbook, she wrote that she was interested in “horses, men, books and people.”
Her life was more peripatetic than she wanted it to be: she lived, in succession, in Fayetteville, N.C.; Wayne, N.J.; Dallas, Texas; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Lake Forest, Ill.; Charlotte, N.C.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Farmer City, Ill.; and Ann Arbor, Mich. She married Theodore Hinchman, with whom she had four children. The marriage ended in divorce. She married Robert Hogan, who preceded her in death.
Known in her adult life as Betsy, she was a lifelong volunteer, and freely gave her time and administrative skills to the Linn County Mental Health Board, PFLAG, the PTA and WomanReach. She organized and led a support group for HIV-positive men in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and served as president of the League of Women Voters in Iowa, where she lived for 15 years. She was an ardent campaigner for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Passionate about early American colonial antiques and historic preservation, she and Robert Hogan exhibited their collections at fairs throughout Illinois. She also worked for KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids and the Farmer City Public Schools. A natural platinum blonde, she was a hair model for Peg's Beauty Salon. She appeared on television and attended conferences with the stylists Peg and Marvin Gaudian. An enthusiastic traveler, she enjoyed her trips to the Bahamas, Italy, Mexico, Monaco, and Turkey.
She is survived by four children, Mark Hinchman, SueAnn Orr, Theodore Hinchman Jr. and JoAnn Barrett; three grandchildren, Jordan Miller, Geoffrey Lilienfeld and Lara Schweizer; and her sister, MaryEllen Horn.
A memorial service was held Oct. 1 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 120 North Huron, Ypsilanti, Mich.
