Hofferber, Janette
Janette Hofferber, 99, of Frederick, Md., formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, Sept. 21, 2009. She was the wife of the late Alex Hofferber. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. David Hohmann will officiate. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, where Mrs. Hofferber will be laid to rest next to her husband of 61 years. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born July 17, 1910, in Manson, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Silas and Myrtle Wright, and was additionally preceded in death by her brother, Stanley Wright.
Surviving her are two children, Mary Healy and husband Tim of Merrimac, Wis., and George Hofferber of Frederick, Md.; four grandchildren, Timothy Hofferber and wife Carli of Janesville, Wis., Matthew Healy and wife Megan of Lake Mills, Wis., Tami Moon and husband Courtenay of Baltimore and Tara Rawlings and husband Aaron of Frederick, Md.; six great-grandchildren, Sydney, Naomi and Isaac Hofferber of Janesville, Wis., Jordan Bayne and Olivia Stout of Frederick, Md., and Miles Moon of Baltimore. Also surviving is her caregiver of 10 years, Linda Hofferber of Hagerstown, Md. Janette will additionally be missed by her friends, Richard Hill, Risa Jewell, Mary Key and Madhu Gill and family.
Mrs. Hofferber graduated from Dinsdale High School in Dinsdale, Iowa, in 1926. Her family then moved to Cedar Rapids, where she graduated from Coe College in 1930. Janette obtained her master's degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., in math and physics. For two years she taught math in a business school in Cedar Rapids, then took a job as secretary to the Linn County Auditor and Board of Supervisors. After raising her children, she worked at a pharmacy, taught knitting at a department store and the last six years of her working career as secretary at First Congregational Church in Cedar Rapids. She moved to the Mayflower Retirement complex in Grinnell in 1997 before moving to Maryland in 1999.
Her hobbies were many: golf, college courses, fitness classes, knitting, needle point, crocheting, weaving rugs, reading, bridge, running the gift shop at the Mayflower and enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She additionally belonged to the PEO and several church organizations.
