Hoeger, Donald L.
Donald L. Hoeger, 74, of Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at Buchanan County Long Term Care, in Independence.
Don was born on Dec. 7, 1937, in Luxemburg, Iowa, the son of Sylvester J. and Marie E. (Wernke) Hoeger. He graduated from the St. Boniface Catholic High School in New Vienna, Iowa, and received a B.A. Degree in Philosophy from Loras College in Dubuque, in 1961, and a JD Degree from the University of Iowa College of Law, Iowa City, in 1965. On Sept. 30, 1967, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Wick in Coos Bay, Ore. The couple resided in Decorah, where Don practiced law with the Isadora Meyer Law Firm. In 1970, Don became an assistant attorney general serving with the Iowa Department of Transportation, Ames, until 1972 when the family moved to Independence, and Don became a partner in the Greif-Klotzbach Law Firm later becoming the Hoeger-McClintock Law Firm practicing until his retirement in 2002.
Don loved his family, he was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He loved cooking, discussing politics and the Iowa Hawkeyes
He was a member of the Iowa Bar Association, the Buchanan County Bar Association, the Judicial Nominating Committee, the Buchanan County Compensation Committee and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Hoeger of Independence; three daughters, Ann Hoeger of Chicago, Marie (Chad) Hoeger Bement of Wauwatosa, Wis., and Margaret Hoeger (Joseph Davoli) of Falls Church, Va.; three grandchildren, Annamaria Davoli and Drew and Jack Bement; his mother, Marie E. (Wernke) Hoeger of Dubuque; a sister; Karen Osterhaus of Davenport; and a brother, Stephen (Jean) Hoeger of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his father.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with the Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be held in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, where a rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday.
