Hockaday, Kurt R.
Kurt R. Hockaday, 47, of Marion, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at Unity Point Health-St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, after a short battle with kidney cancer. Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 2, from 4 to 7 p.m., with a vigil beginning at 7 p.m., at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, with a viewing beginning an hour before, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, by the Rev. David O'Connor. Burial will follow Mass at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Kurt Richard Hockaday was born April 30, 1966, to Richard and Sharron (Hagelberg) Hockaday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He worked at Transamerica for over 14 years and filled his spare time with family activities, golf and bowling, which is one of his longtime passions. He started his career as a star golfer on the Cedar Rapids Washington team. He continued his career as a walk-on for the Iowa Hawkeyes in 1987-1989. He won the Cedar Rapids City Am in 1990 and has represented our city on several Ryder cup teams. Kurt was united in marriage to Nancy Lechtenberg on Oct. 21, 2006, in Springville, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons, Tyler (4) and Trey (2); mother, Sharron Hockaday of Cedar Rapids; brother, Scott Hockaday of Cambridge, Iowa; sister, Stacy Hockaday of Denver, Colo.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Kurt was preceded in death by his father, Dick Hockaday; and grandparents, Francis and Berniece Hockaday and Garold and Erma Hagelberg.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to his sons, Tyler and Trey Hockaday.
