Hoaglan, Cato L.
Cato L. Hoaglan, 76, of Independence, Iowa, passed away March 9, 2011, at his home in Independence after a short illness. He was surrounded by his family.
Cato was born April 2, 1934, in Independence. His parents were Cato L. Hoaglan Sr. and Dorothy (Higgins). He graduated from Independence St. John's High School in 1953. Cato enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1955 and served through 1957. He was a PFC and was stationed at several bases. He was trained as a radar operator. Cato was married to Donna Darlene Gross at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence on Aug. 16, 1958. They were married nearly 52 years before Donna's death in February 2010.
He was a wonderful and devoted father to his three daughters. Dad always had time for us. Dad and Mom taught us to be strong and independent people and to always find time for those we love. His buddies, Baby and Sassy, will miss him too.
He worked as a mechanic in Independence and Cedar Rapids. Dad enjoyed his family, the outdoors - hunting, fishing, camping, hunting morels, bird watching, visiting wildlife refuges and going on many leaf trips.
After retiring, he found his true passion - wood carving. Dad loved carving ducks and song birds. He also taught classes over the past several years. He found a lot of joy through his students and friends. Cato and Donna attended many carving shows and competitions over the years and made a lot of friends along the way. Cato was a long time member of the NE Iowa Woodcarvers Club in Waterloo.
Cato and Donna were blessed with a loving family: daughters/son-in-law, Cynthia L. Drafahl of Independence, Cristina L. and Paul A. Leonard of Iowa City, Jamie J. Hoaglan of Independence, and beloved grandson, Jesse L. Drafahl of Austin, Texas.
Cato is survived by his daughters, son-in-law, grandson, two nephews, many cousins and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother, Francis Richard (Dick); and granddaughter, Emily L. Drafahl.
You were such a kind and giving person Dad. You were loved by all. We take great comfort knowing that you and Mom are together again. And we will all be together again someday. We love you very much.
