Hinkel, Russell J. Sr.
Russell J. Hinkel Sr., 64, died at his home Saturday, June 4, 2011. According to his wishes, Russ donated his body to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program. A Celebration of Life Service, with military honors, will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, in the South Pavilion of Sugar Bottom Campground. Memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Russ was born on May 5, 1947, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of John and Ruth (Huse) Hinkel. Following high school, Russ served his country in the United States Army from 1965 to 1971, serving one tour during the Vietnam War. For many years, Russ worked as an electrical assembler at Evergreen Packaging (formerly Cherry Burrell), until his retirement in 2005. Most recently, Russell and his wife, Barb enjoyed being custodians at Sugar Bottom Campground.
Russ is survived by his wife, Barbara; his mother, Ruth; three sons, John Hinkel, Danny Hinkel and Trevor (Jolleen) Hinkel; a daughter, Trudy (Chad) Troendle; two stepsons, Gary Darrow and Aaron (Yalisha) Case; and two stepdaughters, Theresa (Stephen) Drake and Denise Wall.
Russ is also survived by his brother, Gary; two sisters, Tammy (Vernon) Werning and Kathy Pribyl; 25 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Hinkel; and his brother, James Hinkel.
