Hilbert, Verla M.
Verla M. Hilbert, 96, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at the Hiawatha Care Center following a long illness. Per Verla's wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, Iowa.
Verla was born Oct. 15, 1914, in Broadview, Mont., to Silas W. and Elsie (Heverly) Eller. She moved to Center Point, Iowa, in 1928, and graduated from Center Point High School in 1932. On Nov. 22, 1933, she married Lincoln LaRue Hilbert in Austin, Minn. He died Dec. 23, 1975, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Verla was employed at John Hancock Insurance Company, Cincinnati, Ohio, for over 30 years. After retiring in 1984, she moved to Cedar Rapids. Verla was a member of the First Christian Church of Center Point.
Survivors include her brother, Beryl (Loreen) Eller of North Fort Myers, Fla.; her sister, Thea Leslie of Cedar Rapids; her niece, Nancy (Wayne) Lang of Centerport, N.Y.; and her grandniece, Brooke (John) Britton, D.V.M. of New York City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Thomas Condon, (who helped raise her); her husband; a brother-in-law, Roger Leslie; and a grandnephew, Michael Lang.
Verla's family is most appreciative of the wonderful loving care that has been provided for her during the past eight years while she has been a resident at the Hiawatha Care Center.
