Hieber, Karl J.
Karl J. Hieber, 74, of Iowa City, passed away Friday, May 3, 2013, at the Solon Care Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Solon.
Karl John Hieber was born May 17, 1938, on their farm to William and Ada (Koenig) Hieber. He graduated from Solon High School and served several years in the Iowa National Guard. During this time he had the honor of serving as one of President Hoover's casket bearers upon his return to Iowa for burial.
Karl married Jan L. Berry on July 21, 1961, in New London, Iowa. She passed away this past December. For many years Karl owned First Avenue Deep Rock station in Iowa City and had also worked for the University of Iowa.
Karl was a member of the El Kahir Shrine, Krazy Klowns, Free Masons and was a past member of the Moose Lodge. He loved parading with the Shriners and klowning-around! When he wasn't at parades or circuses, he enjoyed time around the farm.
Karl's family includes his five children, Rita Hieber of Provo, Utah, Lynne (Mike) Mwangi-Kiguta of Sun Prairie, Wis., Charles (Lisa) Hieber of Cedar Rapids, Shauna (Troy) Hughes of Lawrence, Kan., and Deirdra Hieber of Iowa City; grandchildren, Luke and Grace Mwangi-Kiguta; brother, Dean (Lois) Hieber of Solon; as well as a niece and nephew.
Karl was preceded in death by his wife, Jan; parents; and brother, William “Billy” Hieber.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or the Solon Fire/First Responders.
