Hickman, Lyle J.
Lyle J. Hickman, 79, of Iowa City, died peacefully Monday, April 18, 2011, at the Oaknoll Health Center.Funeral Services will be held at 11a.m. Thursday April 21, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, with Pastor Karla StoltzfusDetweiler officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. A reception will follow at The Kirkwood Room. Graveside services will be at 2p.m. Thursday at Lower Deer Creek Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Lyle J. Hickman Memorial Fund.
Lyle was born Nov. 27, 1931, in Chariton, Iowa, the son of William and Grace Herron Hickman. He was a graduate of Chariton High School and attended college at Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. Lyle served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Haven. On Oct. 23, 1960, Lyle married Mary E. Gingerich at the Wellman Methodist Church.
Lyle was employed for many years with Hy-Vee and later was in car and real estate sales in Iowa City. He cherished the time spent with his family. Lyle enjoyed bird watching and playing poker and shooting pool with his buddies from Hy-Vee.
Lyle is survived by his loving wife, Mary E.; and their two daughters and one grandson, Kim (Jeff) Haring and their son, Michael, and Michelle Hickman (Joe Wilson), both of Iowa City; niece and nephew, Bill Offenberger and Sundee Raudabaug; brothers and sisters-in-law, Minnie (Donald) Knepp of Troy, Texas, Donald (Wilma) Gingerich of Wellman, Mollie (Roy) Miller of Kalona, and Doris Nafziger of Iowa City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; four siblings, Mabel, Wanda, Charles and Doyle; his in-laws, Clark and Louisa Gingerich; and a brother-in-law, Jerry Nafziger.
