HERTHA KATHARINA WOOD
Strawberry Point
Hertha Katharina Wood, 87, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. She was born Feb. 5, 1931, in Buchen im Odenwald, Germany, the daughter of Karl and Elisabeth (Schumacher) Bäuerlein. Hertha attended school in Germany and received training to be a tailor and dressmaker.
Hertha met Warren Wood in Germany while he was stationed there during World War II. After the war, she flew to New York City where she was reunited with Warren. On Oct. 5, 1948, they rode the train back to Manchester. On Oct. 24, 1948, Hertha and Warren were united in marriage in a German and English church service at St. John's Lutheran Church in Dundee. Four children were born to this union.
In 1955, Hertha became a citizen of the United States. Her family still has the flag that she received from that ceremony. For many years, Hertha catered around the area. She was especially well-known for her cinnamon rolls. Hertha worked for almost 20 years as a dental assistant for Dr. Hotz in Strawberry Point. Until just recently, she also owned and operated Hertha's Knitting Corner for many years. Hertha was a talented seamstress, and made many quilts and articles of clothing. She also knitted and crocheted many beautiful sweaters and other things.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Jeanette; two sons, Phillip and Warren (Pete); four grandchildren, Robbie, Christopher, Julie and Justin; two great-grandchildren, Katharina and Michael; one sister, Margaret Kleinert of Buchen im Odenwald, Germany; and many nieces and nephews in Germany.
Hertha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Warren Wood; one daughter, Katharina; three grandchildren, Amy, Paul and Mark; a sister, Liesel; two sisters in infancy, Gabrielle and Anna; and three brothers, Karl, Alois and Hans.
