Hermsen, John D.
John D. Hermsen, 72, of Independence, died Friday morning, Sept. 10, 2010, at Buchanan County Health Center, Independence, following a short illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with the Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, where a rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; four children, Deb (Ralph) Stiefel, Winthrop, Diane (Steve) Leonard, Cedar Rapids, Mark (Dawn) Hermsen, Cedar Rapids, and Michael (Jenifer) Hermsen, Des Moines; six grandchildren; two brothers, Merlin and Kenneth Hermsen, Independence; and two sisters; Alvera Hickey, Independence, and Anna Mae Strawn, Oelwein.
