Herbert V. Hartz, 78, went to be with his Lord on Monday, Aug. 29, 2022, at the Hiawatha Care Center.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, with the Rev. Steve Knudson of First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids officiating. Interment with military rites will be held at St. John Cemetery, rural Newhall. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be designated to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Herbert was born on Oct. 17, 1943, on the family farm near Newhall to Virgil and Ruth (Rammelsberg) Hartz. He graduated from Newhall High School, with the class of 1961 and attended one year of college. “Herb” served his Country in the U.S. Army and reserves from 1964 through 1970.
Herb was united in marriage to Donnabelle Mueller on Nov. 26, 1982, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.
Herb was employed for 25 years at General Mills in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. He loved old cars and had several throughout his life. He could often be found tending to his lawn on his riding mower. He and Donnabelle also enjoyed playing cards and traveling, especially cruises.
He is survived by his wife, Donnabelle; daughters, Jennifer (Scott) Puetz of Albuquerque, N.M., and Julie (Ole) Munson of Gilbert, Ariz.; stepsons, Kim (Cindy) Schlitter of Cedar Rapids and Terry (Katie) Schlitter of Redfield, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; great-granddaughter, Kamryn; and his sister, Mary (Dr. William) Cotton.
