Herbert, James E.
James E. Herbert, 82, of Marion, passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at Crestview Acres in Marion. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann; daughters, Rebecca (Michael) Fanning of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Martha (Jerry Wasilk) Herbert of Ramsey, Minn.; a sister, Ruth Anne (David) Swain of Panama City, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Frances Haller and Susan Keller; five grandsons, Jonathan, Timothy, Nicholas and Christopher Fanning and Thomas Wasilk; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers-in-law, Robert Haller and Terry Keller.
James was born Jan. 2, 1930, to Edwin and Minnie (nee Slay) Herbert in Memphis, Tenn. He graduated from Iowa State University, with a degree in electrical engineering, which profession he followed for the rest of his life. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the Army. He married Ruth Ann Haller in Ottumwa, Iowa on March 17, 1956.
Jim was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cedar Rapids. He was deeply interested in flying and held his private pilot's license for over 40 years.
Jim's gentle spirit and wry sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the staff at Crestview Acres and the staff of Care Initiatives Hospice for the love they showed Jim.
