Herbert J. Hazewinkel Sr., 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, at Northbrook Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral service: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018, at
Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, with visitation
one hour before service. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Herbert was born Oct. 9, 1928, the son of Henry and Marie (Kray) Hazewinkel, in Dewitt, Iowa. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1948 to 1952. On July 30, 1950, Herbert married Lorna Foubert in Cedar Rapids. He worked as a pattern maker for Iowa Steel & Iron Works Inc. for 30 years before retirement.
Herbert was a master craftsman. He was the first male president of the PTA for Cedar Rapids schools. He also was a scout master for the North Star District. While living in Arkansas, Herbert was the potentate for the Shriners organization. He was a member of the El Kahir Shrine and a Mason with the Mt. Hermon Lodge No. 263.
Herbert greatly enjoyed making popcorn for several events and never charged for a single bag. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his three children, Herbert Jr. "Butch" (Mary) Hazewinkel, Kathy (Mark) Jayne and Michael (Karen) Hazewinkel; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Darlene Robinson and June Stephens; two sisters-in-law, Nadine Hazewinkel and Loretta Shearer; and brother-in-law, Larry Foubert.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorna; infant daughter, Diane Lee Hazewinkel; and parents.
