Herbert Blakemore Maynard, 96, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. Visitation: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2022, with Rosary to begin at 9:45 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass will immediately follow at 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Herbert was born on Sept. 28, 1925, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Horace and Dorothy (Hillmer) Maynard. After high school, Herbert served during WWII in the United States Army. On Aug. 8, 1958, Herbert was united in marriage to Esther Caballero. Esther passed away Nov. 19, 2013, after 55 years of marriage. He was an inspector for the State of Iowa Department of Agriculture and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and later St. Patrick Catholic Church. Herbert enjoyed Catholic media and newsletters and eating his bacon and eggs every morning. Herbert deeply appreciated his neighbors, loved his cats, and dearly missed his wife, Esther.
Survivors include his children, Mary Ann Maynard, Rebecca Maynard, Elizabeth (Lawrence) Maynard Hoffman and Charles Maynard; and grandchildren, Jessica (Billy) Pollett and Jane Susnik.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Esther; and siblings, Rick Maynard, Jean Fairhurst and Alice Winburn.
Herbert’s family would like to extend their gratitude to his caregivers, Sue and Doreen as well as the staff at Hospice House for their exceptional care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Hospice House of Mercy or St. Patrick Catholic Church.
