Herb Hartzler, 94, of Iowa City, died Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Herb was born Dec. 27, 1922, in rural Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Herb and Emma Hartzler. Herb married Dorothy Taylor on May 23, 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a machinist by trade. Herb enjoyed hunting, fishing and square dancing.
His family includes his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Kathy Knight (Glenn) of Kissimmee, Fla., and their children, Glenn and Katie; son, Jeff (Michelle) of Cedar Rapids; and son, Jim (Susan) of Byron, Minn., and their children, Henry, Greg and Emma; and three great-grandchildren. Herb's siblings, Betz, Judy, Ruth, Larry, Bob and Wilma also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sibling, Ron, Vernon and Gene.
Herb choose to donate his body for medical research. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
