Henry "Hank" G. Plagmann Jr., 95, died Monday, May 8, 2017, at Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg.
Hank, the son of Henry G. Sr. and Ella (Hursh) Plagmann, was born July 25, 1921, in Conroy, Iowa. He graduated from Conroy High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was in the infantry and participated in the D-Day invasion and Battle of the Bulge. Hank was united in marriage to Betty Starr on Jan. 20, 1949, at Little Brown Church in Nashua.
The couple lived on the farm west of Conroy until moving to Williamsburg in 1995. They also wintered in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. They moved to Highland Ridge in 2005.
He was a lifelong farmer and advocate for agriculture. Henry spent much of his time at the Conroy Co-op, Conroy post office, Stanerson Implement and visited with other farmers at the Landmark. He enjoyed farm technology and Oliver tractors. During the 1970s, he worked for Holden's Foundation Seeds in Molokai, Hawaii, and Homestead, Fla. He was proud to fly the U.S. flag at Conroy corner. He formerly served with Cedar Valley Business Association (president), Iowa Soybean Association board, Iowa County Beef board, Iowa County Corn Growers and Williamsburg Planning & Zoning board, and was a life member of the Iburg Poulson VFW Post 8797, American Legion and the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of 68 years; three sons, Gregory (Taina) Plagmann of Palm Bay, Fla., Charles Plagmann of Casselberry, Fla., and Harlan (Angela) Plagmann of Peachtree City, Ga.; and seven grandchildren, Brad Plagmann, Amanda Plagmann, Christine Plagmann, Kaila Plagmann-Aylor (Kyle), Cetera Plagmann, Heather Schwake-Smith and Opalynn Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Wilma Schmidt and Gretchen Cantril; and a brother, Hurshel Plagmann.
Celebration of Life service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg, with Pastor Dan Jessop officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, where there will be a VFW service held at 7 pm.
A memorial fund has been established for American Heart Association.
