HENRY E. HAEGG
Cedar Rapids
Henry E. Haegg Jr., 93, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully at home in Naples on Feb. 25, 2017.
Henry is survived by his sister, Norma Louise Pollock of Menlo Park, Calif.; four stepchildren and spouses, Larry and Judy Halpin, Cathy and Bill Munsell, Jamey and Mary Halpin and Molly and Timothy Eovino; step-daughter-in-law, Kathleen Halpin; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A fifth stepchild, David Halpin, passed away May 5, 2013.
He also is survived by nieces and a nephew, Suzanne Peisch, John Henry Pollock and Sally Lannin.
Henry was born Dec. 8, 1923, in Cedar Rapids, to Henry and Bertha Haegg. Raised and educated through high school in Cedar Rapids, he enrolled at Iowa State College, where he earned mechanical and civil engineering degrees. During World War II, Henry served on Okinawa as a naval ensign; subsequently he earned a MBA at Harvard Business School.
He returned to Cedar Rapids to work with his father's construction business. In 1958, he founded Central Services Co. in Cedar Rapids, whose early business was retail coal, roofing and construction. Over time the name became Haegg Construction Co. and emphasis became cement construction of streets and roads for cities and states.
A 32nd Degree Mason, Henry traveled worldwide, documenting his travels with thousands of photos.
Henry and Margaret "Peg" Halpin were married Nov. 28, 1969, in Cedar Rapids, where they lived until locating in Naples, Fla., in 1970. Peg passed away Feb. 14, 2008.
Like his father before him, Henry was active in various community and college affairs. Known as a dependable dedicated worker, he was a significant
fundraiser for United Good Neighbors and others. Additionally, he served on a number of volunteer management committees; perhaps most noteworthy were
board chair for Cedar Rapids' St. Luke's Hospital, 1976 to 1978; and two endowed chairs for Coe College. Though quiet about his philanthropy, Henry was fond of and generous to both the Naples and Cedar Rapids communities.
Henry had genuine concern for people and their
well-being, including his extensive family. The following note by grandchild Shannon Zuzek reflects feelings held commonly for Grandpa Henry. "Last night much love traveled with Grandpa Henry as he made his way to heaven. I am so grateful this longtime bachelor accepted the package deal of five children and two grandchildren (with more to come) when he and my Gabba fell in love. He quietly made a lasting impact on countless lives in his 93 years, and I am lucky to have been one of them."
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts to Christ Episcopal Church, Cedar Rapids.
A Celebration of Life will be at 11 a.m. July 15 at Christ Episcopal Church, Cedar Rapids.
