Henderson, Richard Charles
Richard Charles Henderson, 94, of Central City, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Willow Gardens Care Center, Marion. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Central City, by Father Wayne Droessler. The family will greet friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, with a Scripture service beginning at 3 p.m. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery, Coggon.
Survivors include his children, William (Mary) Henderson of Central City, Michael Henderson of Cedar Rapids, Lisa (Tom) Swanson of Manchester and Janice (Michael) Martin of Shellsburg; seven grandchildren, Kerry and Casey Boyle, Jennifer Malone, Michael III, Justin and Christopher Martin and Austin Henderson; three great-grandchildren, Luna, Loki and Moxie Malone; and his brother, Kenneth (Doris) Henderson of Anamosa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; infant daughter, Kathryn; a brother, Dale Henderson; and a sister, Dorothy Whiting.
Richard was born in rural Central City on March 26, 1919, the son of Lawrence and Lena (Brunen) Henderson. He graduated in the 8th grade from the Red School and worked as a hired hand in farming. He worked several years at the Mental Health Institute in Independence as assistant herdsman. On Aug. 6, 1947, he married Helen Rose McNulty at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. Together, they owned and operated a family dairy farm in the Central City area for 50 years. He was a lifelong Farm Bureau member.
