Hemphill, Merle
Merle Hemphill, who died peacefully on March 7, 2013, aged 86, was the middle child of nine born to Joe and Belle Hemphill. He grew up in Marshalltown before settling in Cedar Rapids with his wife of 64 years, Harriett Streuber, who survives him. They had three children: Dennis (1950-86), Denise (born 1958) and Teresa (born 1961).
For many years Merle worked at Penick & Ford in Cedar Rapids and ran his own roofing business, H & W Construction, working tirelessly to provide for his family.
Merle was generous and concerned for the less fortunate. A man of few words, he had a spiritual, curious mind, and would often sit in quiet contemplation. He was a fan of travel, westerns, and strong coffee (“three fourths full”).
Merle was loved by many and will be much missed.
In lieu of flowers, you may help support St. Stephen's Lutheran Church.
Please join the Hemphill family at a memorial service at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, on Monday, March 11, at 1 p.m.
