Helen T. Simpson passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Sept. 5, 2022. There will be a service to celebrate Helen’s life at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home with Pastor Nick Grove officiating. A visitation will be prior to the service starting at 11 a.m.
Helen was born on June 29, 1942, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of John and Mary (Monaghan) Zaruba. She was married to George Simpson on April 21, 1978, in Palmyra, MO and they enjoyed many adventures together.
Survivors include three daughter,s Deb (Jeff) Schwiebert of Mt. Vernon, Lori (Ryan) Burrell of Quasqueton and Terri Herb of Cedar Rapids; stepchildren, Denise Dronen, Steve Simpson, Terry Simpson, and Rob Simpson and their families; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Paul Zaruba of Cedar Rapids; and sister, Mary (Ken) Willits of Oklahoma. Helen also was especially close to her uncle, Charlie Monaghan. Additional survivors include many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, George, and brother, John Zaruba.
Helen retired from MCI in 2005. She had a keen sense of humor and loved to laugh. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed attending her Bible study group. She dearly loved searching for recipes and cooking for her family. Her greatest passion however was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her other pastimes included reading, gardening, and needlework.
