Helen Joan Sloan, 84, of Independence, died April 24, 2014, at Buchanan County Health Center.
Joan was born July 6, 1929, in Atlantic, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Eva (Parmley) Ruhr. After
graduating from Atlantic High School in 1947, she attended Iowa State University for two years. On Oct. 30, 1949, she was united in marriage to Dr. James A. Sloan at First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. They made their home and raised their family in Independence. Joan was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she served on the Mary-Sarah Circle. She also belonged to Ladies Literary, Ladies Musical and PEO.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Dr. James Sloan; daughter-in-law, Mary Joe Sloan; and a grandson, David Sloan.
She is survived by three sons, James (Mary Kay) Sloan of Pine City, Minn., John (Deb) Sloan of Boise, Idaho, and Dr. David (Krys) Sloan of Mason City; a daughter, Michal (Mark) Roskos of Winona, Minn.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Gene (Joann) Ruhr of Columbia, Mo.; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Miller of Hood River, Ore.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, April 28, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence, with the Rev. Kurt Bockoven officiating. Inurnment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence.
