Helen Elizabeth Schwarting was born Jan. 23, 1925, south of Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Simmons) Hasley. She lived in the Marengo, What Cheer and Williamsburg areas growing up and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1943. She joined the WACS during World War II and served stateside from 1945 to 1946. Helen was united in marriage to Oren George Schwarting on May 6, 1948, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Together they were blessed with seven children. Oren died April 23, 1977. Helen worked at the Landmark Restaurant for nearly 30 years until her retirement. She was a charter member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post No. 8797. She was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where she served on the Altar and Rosary Society and sang in the choir. Helen was a warm, kind and charitable person, who loved to read, laugh and sing. She has a quick wit and could talk your ear off. Helen passed away Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 95.
She is survived by her children, John Schwarting of Williamsburg, Stephanie ( Bob) Diaz, Sheila (Mark) Marzano, Brian Schwarting and Jim (Kelly) Schwarting, all of Seattle, Wash.; a son-in-law, Jim Rowe of Seattle; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, James Hasley of Davenport; and a sister-in-law, Irene Hasley of Rock Island, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Damon Caldwell; husband, Oren; daughter, Marcia Rowe; son, Gregory Schwarting; a sister, Mary Randelman; and brother, Donald Hasley.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. There will be a VFW Auxiliary service at 2 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Iburg Poulson VFW Auxiliary Post No. 8797.
