Helen attended Cass No. 4 School, grades K-8, and then graduated from Strawberry Point High School. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and received a certificate to teach elementary school. Helen briefly taught in rural schools and then in Maynard. She spent the rest of her teaching career at Lambert Elementary School in the West Delaware School District, until her retirement in 1991. All of her college education was earned in summer school and through correspondence courses. Helen earned a Master's degree in education at the University of Wisconsin. She was a member of the West Delaware Education Association, Iowa State Education Association and National Education Association.
Helen was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manchester, where she was a member of the quilting group. She was also a member of the Flora Garden Club, the floral committee at the Delaware County Fair and the Manchester Audubon Club. She spent much of her time in her flower beds, garden and greenhouse. Helen loved her cats, most of them were strays that she rescued.
Helen remained in her home until health issues required her to spend her remaining nine years in the Good Neighbor Home. She was a positive and happy person, even though she was wheelchair bound. Helen participated in many of the activities offered there. She will be remembered especially for her wit, sense of humor and upbeat approach to life.
Helen is survived by a brother, Paul Duane Schmidt of Fridley, Minn.; her sister, Dorothy (Ron) Stocks of Lincolnshire, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
