Helen Marie Tucker Sorensen, 95, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022, at The Views Senior Living in Marion.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, with a funeral Mass to be held immediately following at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be held in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cedar Valley, Iowa. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch is caring for Helen’s family. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be made to Iowa State University 4H Foundation.
Helen was born June 30, 1927, on the family farm near West Branch the 2nd of 7 children to Leo G. and Margaret (Shima) Tucker. She was a graduate of Springdale High School, Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and Iowa State University. Following graduate school, most of her life was spent as an Extension Educator for Iowa State University and the University of Illinois. Helen enjoyed many years of judging 4-H state fair entries and teaching her children and everyone what it takes to be a blue ribbon winner.
Helen enjoyed traveling, visiting every state in the lower 48 as well as 18 foreign countries, reading, cooking, sewing, art, music and anything cultural. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.
She is survived by three children, Christopher Sorensen of Paris, France, Ann (Mark) Shinkle of Orlando, Fla., and Margaret “Peggy” (David) Foarde of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren; and a sister, Jean Bumsted of Burr Ridge, Ill. Also surviving are many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Monte, in 1975 at age 9; brother, Harold; two sisters, Lee Steffen and Pat Peacock; and two infant sisters, Eleanor Frances and Marjorie Ellen.
Helen’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at The Views in Marion, Mercy Hospice and Lori Bredl for their thoughtfulness, help, support and compassion in caring for Helen.
