Helen Irene Kuhl, 79, of Williamsburg, formerly of Manilla, Iowa, and Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at Highland Ridge, Williamsburg. A memorial service celebrating Helen's life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with the Rev. Daniel Krueger officiating. Inurnment will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. that Saturday at the chapel.
Survivors include her sons, Steven (Laurie) of North Liberty and Bob of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Adam (Lyssa) Kuhl of Carlisle, Melissa Kuhl of Dubuque, Matthew, Ethan and Hannah Kuhl, all of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Keegan and Huxley Kuhl of Carlisle; sisters-in-law, Gloria Jensen of Phoenix, Ariz., and Leora Webster of Des Moines; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin; daughter-in-law, Lucy Kuhl in 2010; sister, Anna Jean Smith; brother, William Jensen; and brother-in-law, Richard Smith.
Helen Irene Jensen was born Aug. 6, 1934, in Defiance, Iowa, the daughter of Berg and Etta (Nielsen) Jensen. She graduated from Harlan High School in 1952 and then attended Simpson College in Indianola, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She graduated from Simpson College in 1954. On June 12, 1955, she married Marvin Kuhl in Harlan. He died in 1992. Helen worked at the Manilla Community Schools from 1954 to 1956 and then at the Coe College Music Department from 1980 to 2000, when she retired.
She was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla, Iowa, King of Kings Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, and Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha, where she played the organ at all three churches.
Memorials may be given in her name to the American Cancer Society.
Helen's family would like to especially thank Hospice of Iowa City and caregivers Cindy Lavely and Christina Jordan for the care given to Helen.
