Helen E. Getta, 93, of Waukee, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died at home on Saturday, April 21, 2018. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, with a 7:30 p.m. rosary at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church followed by burial at Chapel Hill Cemetery.
Helen was born in Raeville, Neb., on July 24, 1924, to Theodore and Frances (Preusser) Schmitt. She and her sister, Wilma, moved to Cedar Rapids in 1941, where she later met Leo E. Getta. They were married Sept. 13, 1943, where they made a home until coming to the Des Moines area in 1963. She worked as an office manager for Hinky Dinky grocery stores, retiring in 1982. She returned to Cedar Rapids in 1985, where she worked at Shopko for another 15 years.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Des Moines and All Saints Church in Cedar Rapids. She enjoyed the outdoors and working in her garden. She will be remembered as a loving caretaker of her extended family and was devoted to her children and grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include her four children, Nancy Rude, Betty Porter, Katherine Getta and Thomas Getta; grandchildren, Christine (Gordan) Reay, Rebecca Hogue, Kelly Knight, Jason (Katrina) Rude, Jeffrey (Gina) Rude, Brian Stenger, and Jonah, Jeremy, Dustin (Chelsie), Evan and Nicole Getta; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Leo; grandson, Michael Stenger; and siblings, Clarence Schmitt, Norbert Schmitt, Wilma Vanourney, Harold Schmitt, Irene McAleer, Bob Schmitt and Bill Schmitt.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
