Helen J. Gaut, 91, longtime Coralville resident, died Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville. A time celebrating Helen's life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at
Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, concluding with sharing of memories and stories. Private burial services will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Helen's memory to Iowa City Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Helen Jane Akes was born May 9, 1923, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of John Franklin and Sarah Frances (Gardner) Akes. She attended schools in Des Moines, graduating from North High School. On May 6, 1950, she was united in marriage to Robert Ray Gaut. The couple made their home in Coralville on 14th Avenue for many years. Helen worked at Sears Roebuck in Des Moines and later in Iowa City for over 11 years and then for the city of Coralville as city clerk for over 12 years, retiring in 1985.
She loved to stay busy, enjoying knitting and crocheting, reading books, playing bridge and golf and cookouts with family and friends.
Her family includes her two daughters, Jan Anderson (Chris) of Cedar Rapids and Robin Sullivan (Michael) of Coralville.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; four older brothers, Lyman, Floyd, Fred and Dan Akes; and her husband, Robert, who died Oct. 15, 2000.
