HELEN BROM
Iowa City
Helen Betty Brom, 96, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Helen was born March 27, 1918, in Grand Junction, Colo., to Benjamin and Clela Brom. Raised in Newton, Iowa, Helen graduated from Newton High School in 1936. She graduated from the University of Iowa and worked at Hospital School (now known as The Center For Disease and Disabilities) as an occupational therapist until her retirement in 1983.
Helen's life was lived in devotion to the Lord she loved, the service of others, and in support of and contribution to her community.
She was a Hawkeye fan, an avid reader, a devoted dog lover and an active member of the Iowa City First Assembly of God church.
She served as a board member for Youth For Christ, and had been a faithful financial support of it as well as many ministries, missionaries, charities and worthy causes. Helen just lived to give, love and serve.
Helen is survived by her nieces and nephews, Ron (Mary) Hall of Pascagoula, Miss., Bill (Sandy) Williams of Escondido, Calif., Sue Godar of Paterson, N.J., Pat (Norm) Mofjeld of Shoreview, Minn., Dennis Hayes of Denver, Colo., Stephen Brom of Santa Barbara, Calif., Joan (Steve) Peterson of Andover, Minn., and Susan Brom of Los Angeles, Calif.
Helen has nine grand-children from her church family who adopted her: Caleb (BreAnna) Smith, Emily (John) Lopez, Rebekah Smith, Madison Smith (who shares Grandma Helen's birthday), Jordan Breon, Leah Breon, Alec Breon, Lindsay Breon and Carson Breon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Clela Brom; and siblings, Ruth (Hollis) Hall, Margaret (Bill) Hayes, Ed Brom and Esther (Paul) Williams.
Visitation will be Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, 2720 Muscatine Ave., Iowa City. A Celebration of Life service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.
In lieu of flowers, me-morial contributions may be made to Youth for Christ.
Online condolences may be sent to Helen's family at www.gayandciha.com.
