Hegarty, Donald 'Jr.'
Donald “Jr.” Hegarty, 74, of 311 Sunset Dr., Stanwood, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at the Mechanicsville Nursing and Rehab after a long illness. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids. Pastor Randy Kruse will officiate. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Survivors include his wife, Joann; two sons, Pastor Randy (Julie) Kruse of Stanwood and Gregory (Beth) Hegarty of Cabot, Ark.; two daughters, Rhonda (Mike) Gutwiler and Jill (Todd) Sawyer, both of Stanwood; a brother, John (Trudy) of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Winifred Becker of Florence, Ala., and Mary (Gerald) Riedel of Fort Wayne, Ind. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Michelle, Grant, Jessy, Rachel, Tyler, Nathan and Austin.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jr. was born Sept. 7, 1935, in Cedar County, the son of Donald and Frances Springer Hegarty. He married Beverly “Joann” Lala on Feb. 7, 1964, in Dubuque. Jr. was manager of Stanwood Skelgas for many years and was owner and operator of the Clarence Motor Co. He later founded Junction Auto Sales in Lisbon, and owned carwashes in Lisbon and Stanwood as well as Lisbon Auto Body.
Jr. was a former member of the Lions Club. He was a longtime volunteer firefighter in Stanwood and was a faithful member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Stanwood.
Jr. enjoyed his many entrepreneurial endeavors but especially the time he spent with his friends and beloved family.
Memorial donations may be given to Hospice Compassus in Jr.'s name.
