Heeren, Paul Dean
Another member of America's Greatest Generation has passed.
Paul Dean Heeren, 91, of Onslow, died May 15, 2013, at the Anamosa Care Center following a brief illness. Funeral services, to celebrate his life, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at First Presbyterian Church in Onslow. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lahey Funeral Home in Wyoming. Burial will be in Buckhorn Cemetery, Maquoketa, with military honors accorded by American Legion Post 259 of Wyoming. Military, public safety and veteran uniforms welcome.
Paul was born Jan. 9, 1922 in Sand Springs, Iowa, son of Jack and Lucille (Lang) Heeren. The family moved to the farm north of Onslow in 1936 from Dundee, Iowa. He graduated from Onslow High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 1st Cavalry Division in the Philippines and Tokyo, Japan. Upon his return from the war he farmed with his father. Paul married Helma Elsie Weirup on June 15, 1947, in Maquoketa.
Paul farmed the 200 acres north of Onslow until retiring in 1987. He was the longest serving member of Onslow First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. Paul was a very active member/officer for over 60 years of American Legion Post 259, Wyoming, Iowa. He served as Iowa American Legion 2nd District vice commander and chaplain. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the First Cavalry Association. Paul again served his country as a Jones County Selective Service board member for 10 years.
Paul enjoyed traveling with family and friends to places like Nashville, Tenn., Branson, Mo., Las Vegas, Nev., and the national park areas where son, Ron and family lived and worked for over 25 years.
He is survived by one son, Ron (Dorie) Heeren of Friday Harbor, Wash.; one daughter, Carole Paschedag of Onslow; seven grandchildren, Jackie (Brian) Walters of Las Vegas, Nev., Jake Heeren of Friday Harbor, Wash., Alex Heeren of Boulder City, Nev., Sarah Heeren of San Leandro, Calif., Zach (Brandi) Aldeman of Fort Madison, Lindsey Aldeman of Cedar Rapids and Rachel Aldeman of Maquoketa; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Kenny Heeren of Lansing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helma; sisters, Gladys Blanchard and Edna Schnoor; and a son-in-law, William Aldeman.
